I have been involved in and around music for most all of my life. I can remember when I was five years old I had a small toy train that to me was a magical thing. The train had tracks that I could put together and on the tracks I would put different colored metal railroad ties. The train would then go around the track and to my amazement it would strike the metal ties and produce a different note. I spent hours upon hours "composing" different melodies with this toy train and although I'm sure I didn't stumble across any Bach or Mozart concertos, to me it was perfect. It was still in my early youth that I fondly remember my great uncles would sit around and play their guitars. We would often have visits where we always looked forward to the stringed instruments making an appearance. I would be amazed as I watched and listened, the agile fingers gliding effortlessly across the fretboards. Hands working in harmony, melodic notes dancing with a steady rhythm that brought smiles to our faces. There would be singing and dancing as these various melodies and ryhthms would fill the air and stir our souls! Back in those days, I would run to the kitchen and grab the spoons and do my best to provide a good tempo. It was during those times I knew there was something special about music. I could feel the life, the passion, and the unspoken bond that music brings to each and everyone of us. I remember those early years with warm memories and even though time would move forward and change the players, the music was in my soul. I didn't know it then, but as I grew up, music became a part of me and I became a part of the music. I had absolutely no idea what God had in store for me. It would be many years before I realized His perfect plan for me.

As a young teenager I was introduced to the saxophone and for a couple of years I played that wonderful instrument. A beautiful combination of mechanical levers and polished brass that would sing out notes and inspire many emotions. This was my first experience with the language of music, which in itself was another fantastic discovery for me. Lines and dots and circles all working together to tell a melodic story. It was a fantastic experience that gave me an even deeper appreciation for music. Soon however, I found that baseball, bicycles, and model rockets would divert my attention away from music for a little while. Even so, I knew the musical stirrings in my soul would only take a break for a short time, a very short time. I remember the first time I picked up a bass guitar. Now here is an instrument that can literally move the soul and some furniture too! Often overlooked but completely integral to music, I fell in love with the bass guitar even before I knew it. I would go to the local music shop and rent one for a week at a time and play along with records until my fingers hurt so bad I had to stop. Working part time in high school I finally saved up enough money to buy my first bass guitar. From this point the bass guitar was "the" instrument for me. My friends and I would gather together and play music. It was probably more torture for our parents and neighbors than we can imagine, for they had to endure the relentless 3 song repetoire! From my mid teen years until my early twenties, I played the bass guitar constantly. During these years I was able to meet and play along with several very good musicians which allowed me to become very focused and bring me to a high level of musicianship. It was at this point I found myself about to travel down another road. A road that God would use to develop and refine his perfect plan in me. A plan that was still years away from being revealed to me.

At twenty two years of age I joined the United States Air Force and found myself flying across the Atlantic Ocean with a destination of England. This was 1987 and I was going to be there for two years. Of course I had to have my bass guitar with me! My trusted Rickenbacker, which I bought in 1985. I still have the bass guitar to this day and well, it has become like a family member to me. While in England, God sent me my future wife Nikki. We were married in 1990 and in 1998 we were blessed with our son Robert. Nikki has been there for me musically the entire time. For over 20 years she has encouraged me and has always listened to my dreams and desires with music. She never once stopped listening to the music I was trying to write and I know there were times when I had some less than desirable results. Nikki was and still is encouraging at every step of the way. Once again, God was working his perfect plan for me and gave me a life partner that understood music, its passion, and its deep meaning in my life. It was while I was in England that God continued to shape and mold me musically. During my stay in England I picked up a second hand guitar, some keyboards, and a 4 track recorder. I had so many melodies and rhythms in my head that I started to capture them. I look back at that time now and I think, "Wow, little did I know what God was starting up". I spent countless hours while I was in the Air Force fufilling his plan and I didn't realize it until years later.

After we served our time in the Air Force we came back to my hometown, settled down and I continued to hone my craft in songwriting. It was during these years in the 1990's that things started to really click for me musically. I found myself at a point where I was comfortable enough musically to start writing songs that seriously examined our world and the situations we see and face. In 1998 I finished up my first cd entitled, "World". Even at that time I felt that the music I was doing and creating was from me. God was slowly starting to reveal his plan to me and in my heart he placed the desire to write music that included Him in the lyrics. When I was in the process of writing the music for the "World" cd, I was writing about our present world and God was talking to my heart. This did not happen overnight and most of the time I was still trying to pursue my own agenda. It was not until 2004 that God fully revealed what He has been working in me. All the years of practice, sore fingers, and every single note I have ever played was to prepare me for what is now the absolute best chapter in my musical journey. I am here so that God can use me to open peoples hearts and minds to the truth in his son, Jesus Christ. I am completely humbled to know that God has chosen me for this awesome journey and purpose in life. His words, His thoughts, and His music flows through my hands and my voice. I am in awe of his amazing and perfect plan. Anthems, ballads, and prayer hymns found in this collection of songs can be described as being acoustic based, boosted with a large but not overwhelming blend of keyboard, drum / percussion and sythns tracks, making the finished accompaniment very full in sound.

While the combined musical accompaniment sound does work very nicely in supporting the variety of inspiring contagious melodies, and Bob's heartfelt, sincere vocals, the strength and most outstanding and admired aspects of these personal ballads, prayer hymns and anthems can be found in each of the songs' memorable melodies and meaningful lyrics, which showcase Bob's strongest musical gifts and talents: Creating moving, interesting melodies, and pairing these tunes with the perfect, expressive lyrics to deliver the desired message.

Bob Hughes' heartfelt testimony and statement of faith can be found flowing through the themes of the songs found on Praise In Hymn; encouraging the listener to open one's heart to Jesus, spend time with Him, trust and depend on the Lord and think about the legacy we will leave here when we leave this life.

Bob Hughes is a gifted, Spirit-filled songwriter and composer, who makes the most of his talents to create songs which truly encourage and uplift both the believer and seeker, by expressing who Jesus is and what it means to belong to Him, have a relationship with Him, offering the hope and love we can depend on in our struggles here on earth, and in using our gifts to promote the Gospel.

His uncanny knack and ability through the Holy Spirit to bring a song alive with meaningful, clever lyrics and a full, supportive accompaniment is fully evident in every song found in PRAISE IN HYMN, and I highly recommend this CD for your Christian music collection. He is a tremendous blessing to his church family, his internet community, and some day to the Christian music community and the world; All in God's time.

Julie Carr,
Christianmusic.com

Seasons Of Life - Review by Warren Strand

Let me take a moment and reflect about Seasons of Life...I wanted to wait a few days before writing you so I could take in the CD more than once. I do my best listening during my commute, so the CD has been stuck in my car player since it came in the mail Monday. It is still in there. I hear the Voice of God in your songs! Yes, it is your vocal chords banging together, your fingers strumming, your brain composing, etc...BUT, our Lord is speaking. I am being ministered to while I listen, and even when I think about the message without hearing the CD. Seasons of Life is truly a ministry CD! It is clear that God intended you to put it out, and has used His instrument (you!) in a wonderful way! The songs make me tune in to what God wants me to do...to deepen my walk, to notice His voice in my daily life, to be quiet and listen.Your lyrics are well done, and moving. The hooks are placed well, and the harmonies stand out very much...a real "blast to the past" for me as I grew up in the sixties to those types of harmonies - some of them recall for me Peter, Paul & Mary - without Mary! Some of PPM was just the guys, Peter taking the low harmony and Paul taking the high melody...wonderful! This construction fit their "Message-Driven" ballad approach, and you have the same thing going..."THE MESSAGE" stands out because of the construction of your vocals! Nice work! Again, the vocals as the lead instrument is a very effective means of delivering THE MESSAGE! Well placed synths, too, Bob. Just the right touch...all the other instrumentation points to THE MESSAGE.

Warren Strand,
Strandedwolfrecords.com

Midnight Mindset - Review by Warren Strand

A slight departure from recent of Bob's releases is Midnight Mindset...however, the departure is ever so slight, since the music exudes all the qualities we expect from Bob: mature songwriting, well-played instrumentation, a joyful message; and this time especially: a journey. As I listen to the songs, I am quite perceptively taken on a journey. The title track is absolutely pregnant with anticipation, leading to the substance of "Equal Separation," and "Event Horizon." By the time "Starlight" greets you, the place you find yourself is quite happy and hopeful! The construction and feel of "Apsoselene" is so very centered on the best of the Enigma project, that the listener is focused on listening, instead of thinking! The journey is fantastic. Rounding out the album are "Orbitus Maximus" and "Fly To Gemini." These two are somehow related, and to this listener seem to bring a concluding peace that is focused on quiet introspection...the type of inner life every true Christian needs to practice - especially in the noisy and dysfunctional world we find ourselves.

Technically, Bob is right on (again!) with Midnight Mindset. With his New Age sounds and voices replacing his vocals, the texture is deeper, yet somehow, the message is the same. "I am happy to be a Christian" is the message I hear from these tracks. In places you will hear Bob's jazz-influenced guitar strains. I have always felt that true "New Age" has an underpinning of jazz licks.. but that's just me. Whatever the reason, Bob adds in some wonderful guitar licks that fit the feel perfectly. Finally, I remain impressed with Bob's percussion work...the fills are as though Bob also plays a good old-fashioned drum kit, in addition to everything else!

I believe that in this case, the "whole is greater than the sum of its parts..." when the parts are as enjoyable as they are, you can just imagine what the sum is all about!

Warren Strand
strandedwolfrecords.com
